At Kielder Primary School, we are committed to being an environmentally responsible school. Our Eco Team plays an important role in promoting sustainability and helping everyone in our school community to take care of our environment.
The Eco Team is made up of pupils who take responsibility for raising awareness, encouraging positive habits and helping to make our school as environmentally friendly as possible.
What does the Eco Team do?
Our Eco Team:
promotes recycling across school, including at lunchtime
looks for opportunities to ‘green’ the school site
encourages pupils to take responsibility for their environment
helps everyone to understand the importance of caring for our surroundings
Through this work, pupils develop leadership, responsibility and a strong sense of environmental stewardship.
Climate Action Plan
We have worked with Climate Friendly Schools to develop a Climate Action Plan for Kielder Primary School. This plan helps us to:
understand our environmental impact
identify practical ways to reduce our carbon footprint
set realistic, pupil-friendly actions to improve sustainability
involve pupils in making positive changes for the future
The Eco Team supports the implementation of our Climate Action Plan and helps to share key messages with the rest of the school.
Eco Team priorities
Together, the Eco Team has identified the following priorities for our school community:
We believe that everyone should:
pick up their rubbish, both inside and outside
recycle as much as possible
reduce food waste
turn off lights, printers and computers when they are not in use
These priorities help to build everyday habits that make a real difference.
Links to our TEK Framework

Wellbeing: pupils help create a clean, safe and pleasant environment for everyone to learn and play in.
Innovation: pupils think creatively about how to reduce waste, save energy and improve sustainability.
Communication: pupils share messages and encourage others to take positive environmental action.
Metacognition: pupils reflect on what changes are working well and where further improvements can be made.
Links to British Values
Our Eco Team also supports key British Values, including:
Mutual Respect: pupils work together to care for shared spaces.
Individual Liberty: pupils are encouraged to make responsible choices that positively impact the environment.
Responsibility and citizenship: pupils learn how their actions affect others and the wider world, helping to prepare them for life in modern Britain.
